RESISTANCE! at Turner Contemporary in Margate

Our visit last Saturday to see the new RESISTANCE Exhibition curated by Steve McQueen at Turner Contemporary in Margate was an interesting experience. As we entered the main hall there was a demonstration taking place with speakers in support of the Palestinian people. Speakers  were asking for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. Police were in attendance and escorted people out of the building at the end of their demonstration.

The exhibition shows the work of  50 photographers who have documented the past 100 years of activism in the UK. They range from the suffragette movement in the early 20th century to the 2003 protests against the Iraq war. The majority of images are  Black and White, which makes them graphic and powerful. Christina Broom, Vanley Burke, David Hurn, Tish Murtha and Edith Tudor-Hart are just a few photographers whose work I am familiar with. The exhibition is free – and well worth a visit!
